Route 1

The EU-Rope Inner Passages

Locations: Ventimiglia, Oulx, Saluzzo (Italy). Briancon, Tourain, Lille, Calais, Dunkirk (France). Brussels, Peruwelz, Warremme (Belgium).

The different fieldworks gathered here focus on solidarity practices and networks along borders and cities within EU. The first experimental nodes in Italy were born with the idea to test the methodology thought for the Solroutes project and to investigate solidarity actors and actions at the border with France and in the nearby agricultural area of Saluzzo. The research on Belgium focuses on the politics of dwelling and solidarity through four strategically positioned nodes along a key migration route, moving from urban squatting politics to translocal solidarity circuits under increasing state repression. The findings suggest that the “dwelling question” opens to peculiar solidarity and assistance politics. Also, the dwelling of state-abandoned migrants cannot be contained within city limits: when migrants face abandonment in Brussels, they often continue their journeys seeking protection elsewhere, thus connecting urban solidarity struggles to broader migratory routes. In France the studies focus on how dwelling practices reconfigure after repeated cycles of eviction and expulsion along crucial place along the border with UK.
