Waremme and Hesbaye: Emergency Shelters, Civic Housing, and Precarious Dwelling

This fieldwork focuses on research conducted in the Waremme and Hesbaye region of Belgium between February and May 2025. The work expands the inquiry into the spatial and social environments that shape the experiences of people on the move, with particular attention to the emergency shelters and civic housing initiatives distributed across the area. Part of the research was conducted online, as physical presence in a heavily policed fieldwork setting was potentially risky. The research generated valuable insights into the precarious dwelling conditions encountered along migratory routes and further enriched the broader analysis of how migrants navigate, inhabit, and endure temporary and often unstable living infrastructures in Belgium.
