Summer School “Controdizionari del confine”: Introduction to Critical Border Studies
This event builds on the ongoing collaboration between SOLROUTES and ParTeR and connects directly to SOLROUTES’ fieldwork and audiovisual research across Mediterranean migration routes.
Controdizionari del confine introduces students, PhD candidates, and practitioners in the social sciences to border studies through immersion in one of the Mediterranean’s most emblematic sites of unequal mobility — Lampedusa, where hyper-visible tourism coexists with migrants confined to reception “campi.” Combining theoretical lectures with ethnographic fieldwork on land and at sea (including short excursions aboard the boat Tanimar), the programme explores the border not as a fixed line but as a selective machine reproducing global inequality — through waiting, rejection, and the criminalization of solidarity. Teaching connects Lampedusa to other frontier nodes: Tunisia, Cyprus, Morocco, Mayotte, and the Canary Islands.
The school is coordinated by Vincenza Pellegrino (University of Parma), Luca Queirolo Palmas (University of Genoa), and Jacopo Anderlini (University of Parma), together with an international, multidisciplinary faculty spanning sociology, anthropology, geography, ethnopsychology, and political science.
