First PhD Thesis of the SOLROUTES Project Successfully Defended
The ERC-funded SOLROUTES project is proud to announce the successful defence of its first PhD thesis: “Haunting the Border: Passages, Horizons and Memories of Disappearance in Morocco,” by Michela Lovato (PhD in Social Sciences – Migration and Intercultural Processes, University of Genoa; supervisors: Federico Rahola, University of Genoa, and Marijana Hameršak, Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research, Zagreb).
Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Morocco within the SOLROUTES project, the thesis develops an original “border hauntology” framework to examine death and disappearance along unauthorised migration routes. Through the stories of missing migrants, their families, and solidarity networks, it shows how loss at the border is transformed into public demands for truth, justice, and accountability, offering a powerful new contribution to migration, border, and solidarity studies.
